Cancun Sun Pool

Game On, From Both Ends

The Cancun by Sun Pools is a large fiberglass pool designed around one idea: play. Sun Pools says “the Cancun features a game pool design for the water volleyball enthusiast,” and every part of the layout follows through on that promise. At 14′ x 40′ with a 3′ to 5′ to 3′ depth, it has steps and seating on each end and a slope to a 5′ deep middle area, so the action happens in the center of the pool while everyone else has an easy way in and a place to sit at either end. This is the pool for the Northeast Ohio family whose summer plans involve a net, a ball, and a lot of friendly competition.

What Is the Cancun Pool?

The Cancun is a fiberglass pool that Sun Pools lists in one size: 14′ x 40′, with a 3′ to 5′ to 3′ depth. It appears in Sun’s Large Pools category, and Sun Pools lists these as approximate maximum available dimensions.

Sun Pools describes the design this way: “This design features steps and seating on each end and a slope to a 5′ deep middle area.” Sun then explains what sets the Cancun apart: “Unlike other designs with a game pool bottom, the Cancun features a 4′ flat deep area in the middle making the design easier to install and allowing for proper support of the sloped areas.” In other words, instead of a shallow end and a deep end, the Cancun is shallow at both ends and deepest in the middle, with steps and seating waiting at each end. Sun invites you to “play all day with the comfortable nonskid bottom,” and the shell is hand crafted using Sun’s critical point lamination system. The exact step and seating layout at each end is confirmed from Sun Pools’ drawings during your consultation.

What the Cancun Pool Is Not

The Cancun is not a deep-water pool. Its deepest listed point is 5′, in the middle, and both ends return to 3′. If you want water that reaches 8′, the Havana, at 16′ x 40′ with a 3′ to 8′ depth, and the St. Croix, at 15′ x 40′ with a 3′ to 8’4″ depth, share the Cancun’s 40′ length but are built for deep-water swimming rather than games.

The Cancun is also not a traditional shallow-to-deep layout. Models like the Catalina, at 14′ x 32′, and the Dominican, at 15′ x 35′, both list a sloped 3′ to 7′ depth. The Cancun’s 3′ to 5′ to 3′ profile puts the deepest water in the center and entry steps at both ends, which is exactly what a game pool needs: two sides, two ways in, and a middle to play across. If lounging features matter more than games, the Tropic, at 16′ x 42′ and 3′ to 6′, with its tanning island and bench seating, is the better fit.

Why Sun Pools?

Sun Pools started producing hand crafted swimming pools featuring American made composite materials in 1995. Every shell is built at the company’s plant in Albany, Kentucky, which Sun Pools describes as an EPA approved Title V facility utilizing state of the art technology. Sun offers over 30 pool and spa designs in 4 color finishes, and it says its critical point lamination system delivers “the toughest pools on the market.”

For a 40′ game pool with slopes on both sides of the middle, these construction points stand out:

  • Critical point lamination: Sun uses hand cut sheet fabric for each pool model and places the structural material across the shell from side to side, a process Sun compares to building a high end yacht, instead of running bulk glass end to end or spraying chop glass.
  • A design built for proper support: Sun Pools says the Cancun’s 4′ flat deep area in the middle makes the design easier to install and allows for proper support of the sloped areas, a detail Sun calls out specifically as a difference from other game pool designs.
  • Self-supporting shell: Sun Pools says critical point lamination enables the pool to support itself, so a spreader bar or belly band is not required to handle and place a Sun Pool.

Each one-piece shell is finished with a modified epoxy skin-coat resin, with structural ribs and a reinforced coping, and Sun uses high grade marine FRP resin with no resin fillers. Across its line, Sun Pools gives the floor and steps of its pools a non-skid textured bottom, which on the Cancun means a textured surface underfoot all game long.

Why Fiberglass, and Why the Cancun?

Sun Pools builds its fiberglass pools in the factory, and they arrive on site as a finished shell ready to be installed, saving weeks of construction time. The surface will not need to be replaced like a vinyl liner or acid washed or re-coated like a concrete pool, and Sun says its smooth interior surface will not snag your swimsuit or skin and requires minimum chemical treatment. For a pool that will see active play every summer, a surface that stays smooth and easy to care for is a real advantage.

The case for the Cancun specifically is that it is a purpose-built game pool that arrives already shaped. A center-deep profile with steps and seating at both ends would be a custom project in a pool built in place. The Cancun delivers it as one factory-finished shell, with Sun’s own design note that the 4′ flat deep area in the middle makes it easier to install and supports the sloped areas. With a Northeast Ohio swim season that runs roughly mid-May through September, that means more of the summer goes to volleyball and less to construction.

Cancun Pool FAQs

What size is the Cancun, and what does a 3' to 5' to 3' depth mean?

Sun Pools lists the Cancun at 14′ x 40′ with a 3′ to 5′ to 3′ depth, as approximate maximum available dimensions. That depth listing describes a pool that starts at 3′, slopes to a 5′ deep middle area, and comes back to 3′ at the other end. Sun’s description adds that the middle includes “a 4′ flat deep area.” Instead of one shallow end and one deep end, the Cancun has two shallow ends, each with steps and seating, and its deepest water in the center. As with any pool, keep an adult supervising whenever anyone is in the water.

Why does Sun Pools call the Cancun a game pool?

Sun Pools says “the Cancun features a game pool design for the water volleyball enthusiast.” The layout explains why. With steps and seating on each end and the deepest water in the middle, the layout lends itself to a volleyball net across the middle with a team on each side. Players can reach both ends easily, and the seating on each end gives anyone sitting out a spot to rest in the water and watch.

What is the 4' flat deep area in the middle?

Sun Pools says, “Unlike other designs with a game pool bottom, the Cancun features a 4′ flat deep area in the middle making the design easier to install and allowing for proper support of the sloped areas.” That is Sun’s own design note, and it is one of the reasons Sun gives for choosing the Cancun over other game pool designs. We confirm the exact size and profile of that area from Sun Pools’ drawings during your consultation.

How does the Cancun compare with the Havana and the St. Croix?

All three are 40′ long, but they are built for very different days in the pool. The Cancun is 14′ x 40′ at 3′ to 5′ to 3′, a game pool with steps and seating on each end. The Havana is 16′ x 40′ at 3′ to 8′, with built in swim out seats and a walk around safety ledge. The St. Croix is 15′ x 40′ at 3′ to 8’4″, a rectangle with shallow end steps and a seating area. If volleyball and group games are the plan, the Cancun is the one. If deep-water swimming is the plan, look at the Havana or the St. Croix.

Can I put an automatic cover on the Cancun?

Sun Pools does not list automatic cover compatibility on the Cancun’s model page, and Ohio Paradise Pools confirms cover options during design. Because an Ohio pool sits closed for more than half the year, we build the cover conversation into planning your Cancun from the start.

What optional features can I add to the Cancun?

Across its line, Sun Pools offers inlaid mosaic tile designs, waterline tile trim, built in waterfalls, and color underwater lighting as options, and its pools come in 4 solid color finishes. Ohio Paradise Pools confirms which options fit the Cancun and your site during design, and we can talk through how to set up the deck and surrounding space so game day works for players and spectators alike.

How long does it take to install a Cancun pool?

The Cancun arrives as a one-piece shell finished at the factory, and Sun Pools says its 4′ flat deep area in the middle makes the design easier to install. Most installations take approximately 2 to 3 weeks from excavation through shell placement, plumbing, electrical, and initial finishing, depending on permitting, site access, weather, and decking scope. At Ohio Paradise Pools, we manage the whole project, give regular updates, and offer FaceTime walk-throughs on days you are not on-site. We close every installation with two pool school visits before we consider the job finished.

What warranty does the Cancun pool carry?

Sun Pools backs its fiberglass pool shells, including the Cancun, with a Lifetime Structural Pool Shell Warranty. The interior surface carries a 3 year warranty, and the warranty is transferable within the first 36 months. Coverage follows the terms of the Sun Pools Inc. Shell Warranty Certificate delivered with each pool, and the warranty requires registration with Sun Pools’ corporate office, so register promptly after installation. With Ohio Paradise Pools, that coverage is backed by a local team that has been in business for over 32 years, holds a BBB A+ rating, and was named Cleveland’s swimming pool contractor of the year in 2022, 2023, and 2024.

What does day-to-day maintenance look like for a Cancun pool?

Sun Pools says its smooth interior surface requires minimum chemical treatment, and the surface will not need to be replaced like a vinyl liner or acid washed or re-coated like concrete. Routine care means testing and balancing your water, running the filtration system, and skimming or vacuuming as needed. In Ohio, you will also open the pool each spring and close it each fall. Our two-visit pool school walks you through every routine, so you can care for your Cancun confidently and know exactly when to call us.
