The Havana by Sun Pools is a large fiberglass pool for families who want space to spread out on the surface and genuine deep water underneath. Sun Pools calls the Havana “our largest, most popular 8′ deep pool.” At 16′ x 40′ with a 3′ to 8′ water depth, it gives a busy Northeast Ohio backyard room for a full house of swimmers, floaters, and loungers at the same time. Built in swim out seats and a walk around safety ledge give everyone a place to rest in the water, and the whole pool is finished with Sun’s comfortable nonskid bottom. This is the pool for the household that wants it all in one shell: easy wading water, deep swimming water, and plenty of room in between.

What Is the Havana Pool?
The Havana is Sun Pools’ 16′ x 40′ fiberglass pool, sold in that one size with water from 3′ to 8′. Sun places it among its Large Pools and lists the size and depth as approximate maximum available dimensions.
Sun’s description is short: “This design features built in swim out seats and a walk around safety ledge.” The swim out seats are spots to sit down in the water, catch your breath, and talk with whoever is floating nearby. The walk around safety ledge gives swimmers something to rest a hand or foot on as they move around the pool. Sun Pools says you can play all day in the 3′ to 8′ water depth over the comfortable nonskid bottom, and like the rest of Sun’s line, the Havana shell is hand crafted with critical point lamination. The Havana’s step and seating layout is confirmed from Sun Pools’ drawings during your consultation.
What the Havana Pool Is Not
The Havana is not the deepest pool in the Sun lineup. That title goes to the St. Croix, a 15′ x 40′ rectangle that reaches 8’4″, which Sun Pools calls “the largest rectangle 8’4″ deep model in production.” The Havana answers with an extra foot of width at 16′ x 40′, plus its swim out seats and walk around safety ledge. Choosing between them usually means weighing a foot of width against a few inches of depth.
It is not the longest large pool Sun builds, either. The Tropic stretches to 16′ x 42′ at 3′ to 6′, and it is built around a tanning island and bench seating rather than deep water. Families who mostly stand, play, and lounge may be happier with the Tropic or with the Dominican, at 15′ x 35′ and 3′ to 7′. Families who want water reaching a full 8′ will find that the Havana is the 8′ deep design Sun Pools says is its most popular.
Why Sun Pools?
Sun Pools opened in 1995 to hand craft pools from American made composite materials, and it still builds every shell in Albany, Kentucky, in a plant Sun describes as an EPA approved Title V facility with state of the art technology. Sun says its critical point lamination system delivers “the toughest pools on the market.” On a shell the size of the Havana, three points matter most:
- Structure laid across the width: Sun hand cuts sheet fabric for each model and lays it from side to side across the shell, as a high end yacht builder would. Across a 16′ x 40′ shell with 8′ of depth, that crosswise structure is doing real work.
- A shell that carries itself: According to Sun, critical point lamination makes the pool self-supporting, so crews can lift and set a Havana without a spreader bar or belly band.
- Built in reinforcement: A modified epoxy skin-coat resin finishes the one-piece shell, and structural ribs and a reinforced coping are part of the build.
Sun uses high grade marine FRP resin without resin fillers and offers 4 solid color finishes, all high grade marine finishes with no clear coat to yellow or fog. The non-skid textured bottom Sun puts on the floor and steps of its pools matches the “comfortable nonskid bottom” the Havana’s own page promises.
Why Fiberglass, and Why the Havana?
Big pools built in place take a long time. Sun’s approach is to finish the Havana’s fiberglass shell at the factory and deliver it ready to install, which Sun says saves weeks of construction time. After that, there is no vinyl liner to replace down the road and no acid washing or re-coating the way a concrete pool needs. Sun also says the smooth interior will not snag swimsuits or skin and requires minimum chemical treatment, which is welcome on a pool with this much water.
The case for the Havana specifically is scale plus depth. A pool this size built on site ties up your yard for far longer, and those are exactly the weeks Sun says a factory-finished shell saves. The Havana arrives as one piece, already shaped, with its swim out seats and walk around safety ledge built in. You get one of the biggest footprints in the Sun lineup and the full 3′ to 8′ depth range in a single shell, and our Northeast Ohio swim season, roughly mid-May through September, goes to swimming instead of waiting on construction.

Havana Pool FAQs
What size is the Havana, and what does a 3' to 8' depth mean in practice?
The Havana is 16′ x 40′, with water from 3′ to 8′. That range gives one pool two personalities. At 3′, people can wade and ease in, and toward 8′ the water opens up for floating, treading, and swimming. Forty feet of length leaves plenty of room for that change. With water this deep, set family rules and make sure an adult is supervising whenever anyone swims.
What features does Sun Pools list for the Havana?
Sun lists built in swim out seats and a walk around safety ledge, together with its comfortable nonskid bottom and a shell hand crafted with critical point lamination. When we meet, we open Sun Pools’ drawings for the Havana with you so you can see exactly where the seats and ledge sit before you decide.
Havana or St. Croix: which deep pool fits my family?
Both give you 40′ of length and deep water. The Havana is 16′ wide and reaches 8′, with built in swim out seats and a walk around safety ledge. The St. Croix is 15′ wide and reaches 8’4″, with shallow end steps and a seating area, and Sun Pools calls it “the largest rectangle 8’4″ deep model in production.” If width and places to rest in the water top your list, lean toward the Havana. If a straight rectangle and the deepest water Sun lists come first, the St. Croix deserves a look.
How does the Havana compare with the Tropic?
Sun Pools calls the Tropic its top selling large pool. It measures 16′ x 42′ with a 3′ to 6′ depth and is built around a 5′ x 12′ tanning island, bench seating, and a wrap-around deep-end seat. The Havana matches its 16′ width, gives up 2′ of length, and takes the water down to 8′ instead of 6′. Standing, playing, and lounging favor the Tropic. Deep swimming favors the Havana.
Can I put an automatic cover on the Havana?
Sun Pools does not list automatic cover compatibility on the Havana’s model page. We confirm cover options during design and pick a plan that suits a 16′ x 40′ pool and your yard, since a Northeast Ohio pool spends more than half the year closed.
What optional features can I add to the Havana?
Sun offers inlaid mosaic tile designs, waterline tile trim, built in waterfalls, and color underwater lighting as options across its line, along with 4 solid color finishes. During design, Ohio Paradise Pools confirms which of these suit the Havana and your site, so the pool and patio can be planned as one look.
How long does it take to install a Havana pool?
A Havana usually goes in over approximately 2 to 3 weeks, because the shell comes finished from the factory instead of being built on site. That period takes the project from excavation and placing the shell through plumbing, electrical, and initial finishing, with permitting, site access, weather, and the size of your deck all able to shift it. A 16′ x 40′ shell also needs a clear delivery route, so we check access early. Ohio Paradise Pools runs the whole project, updates you regularly, and offers FaceTime walk-throughs, then finishes with two pool school visits.
What warranty does the Havana pool carry?
The Havana’s shell carries Sun Pools’ Lifetime Structural Pool Shell Warranty, and its interior surface is covered by a 3 year warranty. Sun makes the warranty transferable within the first 36 months. Terms are those of the Sun Pools Inc. Shell Warranty Certificate that arrives with your pool, and Sun requires registration with its corporate office, so register once the pool is installed. Ohio Paradise Pools stands behind the project locally with over 32 years in business, a BBB A+ rating, and the title of Cleveland’s swimming pool contractor of the year in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
What does day-to-day maintenance look like for a Havana pool?
More water does not have to mean more work. Sun says the smooth interior requires minimum chemical treatment, and the surface will not need a new liner or a concrete style acid wash and re-coat. Your routine is testing and balancing the water, running the filter, and skimming or vacuuming the floor, plus opening the pool in spring and closing it in fall around an Ohio season of roughly mid-May through September. Pool school takes you through each task so you can care for your Havana with confidence and know when to call us.
