Catalina Sun Pool

A Classic Rectangle Built for Family Time

The Catalina by Sun Pools is a rectangle fiberglass pool. Sun Pools calls it “our #1 selling rectangle design.” At 14′ x 32′ with a 3′ to 7′ depth, the Catalina pairs clean, classic lines with what Sun describes as “the popular 3′-7′ sloped bottom depth, a large deep-end swim out ledge and shallow end steps with seats on each side.” It gives a Northeast Ohio family wading water, real swimming depth, and places to sit at both ends, all in a footprint that fits a wide range of backyards.

What Is the Catalina Pool?

The Catalina is a straight-sided rectangle, offered by Sun Pools in one size of 14′ x 32′ with water running from 3′ to 7′. Sun groups it with its Medium Pools, and it gives those numbers as approximate maximum available dimensions.

Sun sums up the layout in one sentence: “This model features the popular 3′-7′ sloped bottom depth, a large deep-end swim out ledge and shallow end steps with seats on each side.” Read from end to end, that means steps to walk in on, a seat on either side of them for anyone who wants to sit and watch, a floor that slopes away toward 7′, and a generous ledge in the deep end where swimmers can rest without climbing out. Sun invites you to “play all day on the comfortable nonskid bottom,” and the shell is hand crafted with Sun’s critical point lamination system. The Catalina’s step and seating layout is confirmed from Sun Pools’ drawings during your consultation.

What the Catalina Pool Is Not

The Catalina is not the biggest rectangle in the Sun lineup. The St. Croix, at 15′ x 40′ with a 3′ to 8’4″ depth, is the rectangle Sun Pools calls “the largest rectangle 8’4″ deep model in production.” It adds a foot of width, 8′ of length, and more depth, and it needs a yard to match. The Catalina’s 14′ x 32′ footprint is the practical choice for families who want the rectangle look and a deep end without committing to a 40′ pool.

Nor is it Sun’s only 3′ to 7′ model. The Dominican carries that same depth range over a larger 15′ x 35′ footprint and swaps the single ledge for two corner swim outs. Want still more depth? The Havana reaches 8′ at 16′ x 40′. What sets the Catalina apart is the pairing of a clean rectangle with one big deep-end ledge, plus the sales record Sun reports for it.

Why Sun Pools?

Since 1995, Sun Pools has been hand crafting pools out of American made composite materials at its Albany, Kentucky plant, which Sun describes as an EPA approved Title V facility using state of the art technology. For a rectangle whose long, straight walls are on display, these parts of the build stand out:

  • Side to side lamination: Each Catalina begins as hand cut sheet fabric sized for this model, placed across the shell from one side to the other in a process Sun likens to a high end yacht, rather than bulk glass run end to end or sprayed chop glass.
  • A finish that holds its color: Sun’s 4 solid color choices are high grade marine finishes with no clear coat to yellow or fog, laid over high grade marine FRP resin that contains no resin fillers.
  • Reinforced where it counts: A modified epoxy skin-coat resin seals the one-piece shell, and structural ribs and a reinforced coping are built in.

Sun also says its critical point lamination makes the shell self-supporting, so installers need no spreader bar or belly band to set it. Underfoot, Sun’s non-skid textured bottom covers the floor and steps, from the shallow end steps down to the deep water.

Why Fiberglass, and Why the Catalina?

With concrete, the pool is built in your yard. With vinyl, the liner eventually has to come out. The Catalina avoids both, because Sun finishes the shell in its factory and delivers it ready to install, a step Sun says saves weeks of construction time. The fiberglass surface will not need a liner replacement or the acid wash and re-coat that concrete requires, and Sun says it stays smooth enough not to snag suits or skin while requiring minimum chemical treatment. That means fewer weekends spent on the pool and more spent in it.

The case for the Catalina specifically is balance. It gives you the classic rectangle shape, the 3′ to 7′ sloped depth Sun calls popular, seats flanking the shallow end steps, and a large swim out ledge at the deep end, all in a 14′ x 32′ footprint that fits a wide range of yards. Every one of those features is built into the shell.

Catalina Pool FAQs

What size is the Catalina, and what does a 3' to 7' sloped depth mean?

The Catalina is 14′ x 32′, and Sun calls its depth “the popular 3′-7′ sloped bottom depth.” The shallow end starts at 3′, where the steps and side seats are, and the bottom slopes down to 7′ at the far end, where the large swim out ledge waits. One pool, two kinds of water: easy wading at one end and deeper swimming at the other. Wherever there is deep water, keep an adult watching and set family rules everyone knows.

What does it mean that Sun Pools calls the Catalina its #1 selling rectangle?

“Our #1 selling rectangle design” is Sun Pools’ own description, and we repeat it as Sun’s claim. Here is what the Catalina brings together: a straight rectangle, a 3′ to 7′ slope, shallow end steps with a seat on each side, and a large deep-end swim out ledge, packed into 14′ x 32′. It suits a lot of households without calling for an oversized lot.

What is the deep-end swim out ledge?

Among the Catalina’s features, Sun lists “a large deep-end swim out ledge.” That ledge gives a swimmer a spot in the deep end to sit or hang on and catch a breath without leaving the water. It gives the 7′ end a gathering place of its own, so the seats by the steps are not the only spot to rest. We review the ledge on Sun Pools’ drawings with you during your consultation.

How does the Catalina compare with the Dominican?

Same slope, different shape and seating. The Catalina keeps to a 14′ x 32′ rectangle with steps flanked by seats and one large ledge in the deep end. The Dominican runs 15′ x 35′ with plantation steps with seating up front, two corner swim outs in the deep end, and what Sun calls “large interior room.” Pick the Catalina for a straight rectangle that fits a more modest yard. Pick the Dominican if you have the space and want two deep end corner seats.

How does the Catalina compare with the St. Croix?

Both are rectangles. At 14′ x 32′ and 3′ to 7′, the Catalina is the approachable size. The St. Croix stretches to 15′ x 40′ and reaches 3′ to 8’4″, and Sun Pools calls it “the largest rectangle 8’4″ deep model in production.” Choose the St. Croix for a very large yard and the deepest water Sun lists. Choose the Catalina for the same clean rectangle look in a size far more Northeast Ohio backyards can hold.

Can I put an automatic cover on the Catalina?

Sun Pools does not list automatic cover compatibility on the Catalina’s model page. We confirm cover options for your Catalina during design, because a pool in Ohio spends more than half the year closed and the right cover belongs in the plan from day one.

How long does it take to install a Catalina pool?

Plan on approximately 2 to 3 weeks for most Catalina installations, since the shell arrives finished and in one piece. That window runs from excavation to setting the shell, then plumbing, electrical, and initial finishing, and it can stretch with permitting, site access, weather, or a larger decking scope. Ohio Paradise Pools manages every stage, sends regular updates, and offers FaceTime walk-throughs for the days you cannot be there. Two pool school visits close out the job.

What warranty does the Catalina pool carry?

A Lifetime Structural Pool Shell Warranty from Sun Pools covers the Catalina’s shell. The interior surface has a 3 year warranty, and the warranty is transferable within the first 36 months. Everything follows the Sun Pools Inc. Shell Warranty Certificate included with your pool, and the coverage requires registration with Sun Pools’ corporate office, which is worth doing right after installation. On the local side, Ohio Paradise Pools brings over 32 years in business, a BBB A+ rating, and three straight years as Cleveland’s swimming pool contractor of the year, in 2022, 2023, and 2024.

What does day-to-day maintenance look like for a Catalina pool?

Upkeep on a Catalina is mostly routine. Test and balance the water, keep the filter running, and skim or vacuum when leaves blow in. Sun says the smooth surface needs minimum chemical treatment, and that the surface won’t need to be replaced like a vinyl liner or acid washed or re-coated like concrete. Ohio adds two bookends to the year, an opening in spring and a closing in fall, around a season that runs roughly mid-May through September. Our two pool school visits prepare you for each of those jobs and for knowing when to call us.
