Freeport Sun Pool

A 12' x 24' Pool With Wrap Steps and Corner Swim Ledges

The Freeport by Sun Pools is a small fiberglass pool with a simple claim to fame: Sun Pools calls it “the top selling 12′ x 24′ model.” In Sun’s words, “The design features a large wrap step area in the shallow end, complimented by two corner deep end swim ledges.” The water runs 3′ to 5′ over a comfortable non-skid bottom, and Sun Pools sums up the intent in three words: “Play all day.” For a household that wants after-work swims, weekend games, and a spot on the steps to cool off, the Freeport is a practical place to begin.

What Is the Freeport Pool?

The Freeport belongs to Sun Pools’ small pool lineup. Its listed size is 12′ x 24′, and its water depth is 3′ to 5′. Sun Pools gives those numbers as approximate maximum available dimensions.

Everything in this layout points toward everyday use. The shallow end is given over to a large wrap step area, so getting in is easy and there is always somewhere to perch with a drink in hand. At the 5′ end, Sun Pools lists two corner deep end swim ledges, a place to hang on and catch your breath after a few laps. A non-skid bottom runs underfoot the whole way. The shell is hand crafted with Sun’s critical point lamination system, which the manufacturer credits with “delivering the toughest pools on the market.”

What the Freeport Pool Is Not

The Freeport is small by design. If your plans involve long laps or water well over your head, look higher in the roster. The Catalina is listed at 14′ x 32′ with 3′ to 7′ of depth, and the Havana stretches to 16′ x 40′ with a 3′ to 8′ range. The Freeport stops at 5′.

It also has no tanning ledge. That feature belongs to its sibling, the Freeport Oasis, which shares the 12′ x 24′ size and 3′ to 5′ depth. The Freeport keeps the original arrangement, wrap steps up front and corner swim ledges at the back, and it is the Freeport that Sun Pools calls its top selling 12′ x 24′ model.

Why Sun Pools?

Sun Pools has made fiberglass pools since 1995, all of them at its own plant in Albany, Kentucky, which operates as an EPA approved Title V facility. Three parts of how the company builds matter most for a hard-working family pool like the Freeport:

  • Fabric cut for this shell: Sun’s critical point lamination starts with hand cut sheet fabric for each model, laid from one side of the shell to the other the way a high end yacht is built, instead of sprayed chop glass.
  • A shell that carries itself: thanks to that lamination, Sun says no spreader bar or belly band is needed to lift and set the Freeport.
  • Color that is the finish: the Freeport comes in one of 4 solid marine finishes with no clear coat to yellow or fog, laid over high grade marine FRP resin with no resin fillers.

Every Freeport shell is finished with a modified epoxy skin-coat resin, structural ribs, and a reinforced coping. From the wrap steps to the corner ledges, the floor and steps carry Sun’s non-skid textured surface.

Why Fiberglass, and Why the Freeport?

Concrete is poured and plastered on site. Vinyl hangs a liner inside a wall. A Sun Pools shell skips both routines, because it is built in the factory and shows up as a finished fiberglass shell, which Sun says saves weeks of construction time. Sun also states that its surface won’t need to be replaced the way a liner does, or acid washing and re-coating the way concrete does, and that it asks for minimum chemical treatment.

For the Freeport, the argument is balance. A 12′ x 24′ shell leaves room for a patio and a strip of lawn on many Northeast Ohio lots, yet it still gives you a true shallow end and a 5′ end. The wrap steps turn the shallow end into the social center of the pool, and the corner ledges give the deep end a place to rest.

Freeport Pool FAQs

What does 12' x 24' with a 3' to 5' depth feel like in the water?

Picture two zones. Up by the wrap steps the water starts at 3′, which is where people ease in, sit, and toss a ball around. Toward the far corners it deepens to 5′, where swimmers can tread water or rest on the corner ledges. Sun Pools lists the 12′ x 24′ footprint and 3′ to 5′ range as approximate maximum available dimensions. Whatever the depth, keep an adult watching anyone still learning to swim.

What is a wrap step area?

Sun Pools describes the Freeport’s shallow end as “a large wrap step area.” Steps that wrap an end of the pool give more than one person a way in at once, and they double as a bench in the water for anyone who would rather sit and talk than swim. Ohio Paradise Pools walks you through the exact step shape from Sun Pools’ drawings during your consultation.

What are the corner swim ledges for?

At the 5′ end, the Freeport has two corner swim ledges. They give a swimmer something to reach for after a lap, a spot to rest, and a natural meeting point for older kids and adults who like the deeper water. Having a resting place at both ends of a 24′ pool keeps the whole length in use.

Should I choose the Freeport or the Freeport Oasis?

Both share the 12′ x 24′ listed size and 3′ to 5′ depth. Sun Pools created the Oasis by adding a built in tanning ledge to the layout Sun Pools calls its top selling 12′ x 24′ model. If your family mostly swims and plays, the original Freeport keeps its wrap steps and corner swim ledges with no tanning ledge added. If lounging in shallower water matters just as much, compare the Oasis. We are happy to set the two plans side by side.

Which other Sun Pools models are close to the Freeport's size?

At exactly 12′ x 24′ and 3′ to 5′, Sun also lists the Shoreline, a traditional style kidney design, and the South Beach. The Nassau is a foot longer at 12′ x 25′. The Kingston is shorter at 11′ x 20′, and the Montego Bay is narrower and longer at 11′ x 26′. All share the 3′ to 5′ range, so the decision usually comes down to shape and seating.

Can I put an automatic cover on the Freeport?

Automatic cover compatibility is not something Sun Pools lists for the Freeport. Since the Ohio swim season runs roughly mid-May through September, the months the pool sits closed deserve a plan, and Ohio Paradise Pools sorts out your Freeport cover options during design, before any shell is ordered.

How long will my Freeport installation take?

Because the Freeport shows up as one finished piece, most of the schedule is site work. Plan on approximately 2 to 3 weeks from the first scoop of excavation to a placed shell with plumbing, electrical, and the initial finishing done. Permits, access to your yard, the weather, and how much decking you want can move that number. Our team runs the whole job, keeps you updated, offers FaceTime walk-throughs, and wraps up with two pool school visits.

What warranty comes with the Freeport?

The Freeport shell is covered by Sun Pools’ Lifetime Structural Pool Shell Warranty. Its interior surface has a 3 year warranty, and coverage can be transferred to a new owner within the first 36 months. Terms follow the Sun Pools Inc. Shell Warranty Certificate that ships with the pool, and Sun requires registration with its corporate office. Locally, you have Ohio Paradise Pools behind the job: over 32 years in business, an A+ from the BBB, and the title of Cleveland’s swimming pool contractor of the year for 2022, 2023, and 2024.

How much upkeep does a Freeport need?

Less than you might expect for a pool that gets used this much. Sun Pools says its smooth surface needs minimum chemical treatment and will not need replacing like a vinyl liner or acid washing like concrete. Your weekly rhythm is checking the water, running the filter, and a quick skim or vacuum, and a 12′ x 24′ pool keeps that short. Pool school covers the details before our crew leaves.
