St. Croix Sun Pool

The Long, Deep Rectangle for Families Who Love to Swim

The St. Croix by Sun Pools is a large rectangle fiberglass pool with the deepest listed depth of any model Sun Pools lists. Sun Pools calls it “the largest rectangle 8’4″ deep model in production,” and at 15′ x 40′ with a 3′ to 8’4″ depth, it delivers the clean straight lines of a classic rectangle with plenty of room to swim in deep water. Shallow end steps and a seating area expand the play space at one end, and Sun describes the rest as a roomy interior. This is the pool for the Northeast Ohio family that wants a timeless look in the backyard and serious swimming water in the pool.

What Is the St. Croix Pool?

The St. Croix is a rectangle in Sun Pools’ fiberglass line, built in one size. Sun lists it at 15′ x 40′ with a 3′ to 8’4″ depth, places it in its Large Pools, and gives those figures as approximate maximum available dimensions.

In Sun’s words, “This pool features shallow end steps and seating area expanding the play space, along with a roomy interior.” For a mixed household, that is the formula. The steps and seating make the shallow end a place to walk in and sit, and the long run of open water beyond them belongs to the swimmers. Sun invites you to “play all day with the comfortable non-skid bottom,” and hand crafts the shell with critical point lamination, which it says delivers “the toughest pool design on the market.” The St. Croix’s step and seating layout is confirmed from Sun Pools’ drawings during your consultation.

What the St. Croix Pool Is Not

The St. Croix is not the widest of Sun’s deep pools. The Havana, at 16′ x 40′ with a 3′ to 8′ depth, is a foot wider and lists built in swim out seats and a walk around safety ledge. The St. Croix trades that extra foot for a straight rectangle and a few more inches of depth, 8’4″ against the Havana’s 8′. Both run 40′ long.

It is not a compact rectangle, either. If you love the rectangle look but your yard or budget points smaller, the Catalina, at 14′ x 32′ with a 3′ to 7′ depth, is the one Sun Pools calls its “#1 selling rectangle design.” And if your family mostly stands, plays, and lounges, the Tropic, at 16′ x 42′ and 3′ to 6′, is built around a tanning island and bench seating instead of depth. The St. Croix is for the family that wants the deepest listed depth Sun offers, in what Sun calls “the largest rectangle 8’4″ deep model in production.”

Why Sun Pools?

The company behind the St. Croix has been hand crafting pools from American made composite materials since 1995. Sun Pools builds in Albany, Kentucky, at a plant it calls an EPA approved Title V facility utilizing state of the art technology. A 40′ rectangle with 8’4″ of depth puts these construction points front and center:

  • Crosswise lamination: Sun cuts sheet fabric by hand for every model and runs it from side to side across the shell, a yacht-style method it calls critical point lamination, in place of bulk glass run end to end or sprayed chop glass.
  • No spreader bar needed: Sun says that lamination lets the shell support itself, so a spreader bar or belly band is not required to lift and place it. With a shell this long, that matters on delivery day.
  • Ribs, coping, and skin-coat: The one-piece St. Croix shell is finished in a modified epoxy skin-coat resin, with structural ribs and a reinforced coping built in.

Sun sticks to high grade marine FRP resin with no resin fillers, and its 4 solid color finishes are marine grade with no clear coat to yellow or fog. Its non-skid textured bottom covers the floor and steps, giving sure footing from the shallow end steps out into the open swim area.

Why Fiberglass, and Why the St. Croix?

The St. Croix is formed and finished at Sun’s factory, then delivered to your yard as a completed shell ready to install, which Sun says saves weeks of construction time. Its fiberglass surface skips the liner replacements that come with vinyl and the acid washing or re-coating that comes with concrete. Sun also says the finish is smooth enough not to snag a swimsuit or skin and requires minimum chemical treatment. In an Ohio season of roughly mid-May through September, every week not spent on construction or upkeep is a week of swimming.

The case for the St. Croix specifically is that it gives you both halves of what many families want. A rectangle is the classic backyard shape, with straight lines that sit neatly beside a patio, a lawn, or a long deck. Deep water is what serious swimmers ask for. Sun Pools says no rectangle 8’4″ deep model in production is larger than the St. Croix, and it arrives as a single finished shell with its shallow end steps and seating area already built in. You get the look, the length, and the depth without a long in-place construction project.

St. Croix Pool FAQs

What size is the St. Croix, and what does a 3' to 8'4″ depth mean in practice?

The St. Croix measures 15′ x 40′ with a 3′ to 8’4″ depth, the deepest listing in the Sun lineup. Start at the shallow end, by the steps and seating area, in 3′ of water, and head down the pool as the water deepens to 8’4″ for floating, treading, and deep water swimming. Forty feet gives room for waders and swimmers at the same time. Whenever deep water is involved, have an adult supervising and set rules the whole family follows.

What does Sun Pools mean by “the largest rectangle 8'4″ deep model in production”?

It is Sun Pools’ own description. Sun is saying that among rectangle pools in production with 8’4″ of depth, this 15′ x 40′ model is the largest, and we share that as Sun’s claim. For your yard, the numbers translate to a straight-sided, 40′ rectangle holding the deepest water Sun lists on any model.

What features does Sun Pools list for the St. Croix?

Sun lists shallow end steps and a seating area that expand the play space, a roomy interior, and a comfortable non-skid bottom, in a shell hand crafted with critical point lamination. We lay out Sun Pools’ drawings with you at the consultation, so the steps and seating area are clear before you commit.

How does the St. Croix compare with the Havana?

These are the two deepest models on Sun’s roster. The Havana, which Sun Pools calls “our largest, most popular 8′ deep pool,” is 16′ x 40′ and reaches 8′, with built in swim out seats and a walk around safety ledge. The St. Croix is 15′ x 40′ and reaches 8’4″, with shallow end steps and a seating area. If the clean lines of a rectangle are part of your vision, the St. Croix is the natural pick.

How does the St. Croix compare with the Catalina?

Both are rectangles with a deep end. The Catalina is 14′ x 32′ at 3′ to 7′, with shallow end steps with seats on each side and a large deep-end swim out ledge, and Sun Pools calls it its “#1 selling rectangle design.” The St. Croix, at 15′ x 40′ and 3′ to 8’4″, adds a foot of width, 8′ of length, and more than a foot of depth. A large yard and strong swimmers suit the St. Croix. A more modest yard suits the Catalina.

Can I put an automatic cover on the St. Croix?

Automatic cover compatibility is not listed on Sun Pools’ St. Croix model page. Ohio Paradise Pools confirms cover options during design, and with an Ohio pool closed for more than half the year, we build the cover decision into the St. Croix plan from the beginning.

How long does it take to install a St. Croix pool?

Most St. Croix installations take approximately 2 to 3 weeks, because the shell arrives finished in one piece. That covers excavation, shell placement, plumbing, electrical, and initial finishing, and permitting, site access, weather, and decking scope can each lengthen it. A 40′ shell needs a clear path into the yard, so we look at delivery access early. Our team manages the full project, keeps you posted, and offers FaceTime walk-throughs, and we wrap up with two pool school visits.

What warranty does the St. Croix pool carry?

Sun Pools stands behind the St. Croix shell with a Lifetime Structural Pool Shell Warranty. The interior surface comes with a 3 year warranty, and Sun allows the warranty to be transferred within the first 36 months. The Sun Pools Inc. Shell Warranty Certificate shipped with your pool spells out the terms, and registration with Sun Pools’ corporate office is a requirement, so handle it promptly after installation. You also have Ohio Paradise Pools close by, with over 32 years in business, a BBB A+ rating, and honors as Cleveland’s swimming pool contractor of the year in 2022, 2023, and 2024.

What does day-to-day maintenance look like for a St. Croix pool?

Keeping up a 40′ rectangle comes down to routine. Sun says its smooth interior requires minimum chemical treatment, and the surface will not need relining like vinyl or acid washing and re-coating like concrete. Test and balance the water, run the filtration system, and skim or vacuum along those long straight walls as needed. Open in spring, close in fall. Pool school shows you each of those routines, so you can look after your St. Croix confidently and know when to call us.
